DESCRIPTION:Episcopal Senior Communities Holds 5th Annual Celtic Cup Golf Tournament \nThe annual golf tournament\, dinner and live auction help support isolated and low-income seniors \n(Orinda\, CA\, May 4\, 2016) — The Episcopal Senior Communities (ESC) Foundation is holding their 5th annual Celtic Cup Golf Tournament and fundraiser on May 23\, 2016 at the Orinda Country Club. The Celtic Cup includes a brunch buffet\, golfing\, a cocktail reception\, a raffle\, dinner\, a live auction and an award ceremony. Each year\, this highly anticipated event brings the Bay Area community together for a day of celebration and to raise vital awareness and funds for senior issues. \nAt last year’s Celtic Cup\, the Episcopal Senior Communities raised more than $215\,000. Funds were used for Affordable Senior Housing Communities and to support isolated and low-income seniors who are served through ESC’s Senior Resources programs. SUMMARY:Potting Party at the Conservatory of Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Both newbies and more experienced members are invited to learn tips on potting and mounting orchids. Join us for a great opportunity to repot or mount some of your neglected plants. We’ll also have a potluck lunch social hour\, and a behind the scenes tour of the Conservatory to boot!  \nPaul Bourbin and Dave Hermeyer will demonstrate their techniques and help you in this hands-on workshop. You can bring your own orchids (please no giant Cymbidiums) and supplies\, or we will provide you with an orchid or two (Donations to cover the cost will be gladly accepted). With help from more experienced growers\, each participant can pot or mount a reasonable number of plants. Bring a dish to share for the potluck lunch\, and bring boxes or bags to carry your treasures home.  \nSpace is limited\, so please RSVP to Dave Hermeyer ( dave@hermeyer.us). DESCRIPTION:64th Annual Pacific Orchid Exposition Explores History\, Tradition and Folklore with “A Legacy of Orchids”\n(San Francisco\, Calif.\, Oct.5\, 2015) — The 2016 Pacific Orchid Exposition\, taking place February 26-28 at Fort Mason in San Francisco\, has chosen “A Legacy of Orchids” as the theme for its 64th annual show. \nOrchids are one of the oldest plant species and date back thousands of years. Their legacy and importance in society throughout history have been noted in the Aras Pacis of Ancient Rome and in the Materia Medica\, which is the oldest known Chinese pharmaceutical text. \nThe plant has long been a symbol of refinement\, wildness and exotic discoveries\, but it also represents more than just an object of beauty. For many\, orchids hold special\nmemories while others can be remnants of places and native ecosystems which sadly have been lost. \nThe historical significance of orchids can be further depicted in the Angraceum sesquipedale (pictured above) which is the official image of the 2016 show. This remarkable plant’s roots are traced back to naturalist Charles Darwin who discovered ties between its extremely long spur and a pollinator moth with a probosis\, or a head appendage\, long enough to reach the nectar. \nThe Pacific Orchid Exposition boasts over 150\,000 beautiful orchids from around the world and features docent tours\, orchid potting demonstrations\, cultivation tips and a diverse array of orchids for sale. \nThe event showcases intricate exhibits from local\, national and international orchid growers\, as well as vibrant displays from Orchid Societies around California. Plus\, throughout the weekend there is a silent auction featuring fabulous items to bid on like wine\, art\, trips\, and more. \nThe Pacific Orchid Exposition\, which is the largest orchid show in the United States\, is hosted by the San Francisco Orchid Society (SFOS)\, a 501 (c) (3) organization whose mission is to foster the culture and cultivation of orchids and to promote orchid education to its members and the public.
